Lookout Mountain Elementary
Lookout Mountain Elementary third grade teacher, Mrs. Sara Irwin, exceeds all expectations parents have for their child’s educator. We expect all teachers to be committed to their students, to enforce rules, and to challenge our children. However, Mrs. Irwin takes all of that to the next level. She encourages her students to make good choices and to be good people. She assesses behavior utilizing a color chart with chances to move up for good behavior, as well as down for bad behavior. She has “You Deserve A Compliment” cards the class is encouraged to give each other. She attaches “Warm Fuzzy” comment sheets to work passed around the classroom for students to write nice things about the other student’s work. All the programs she has make the kids feel special. . She promotes a wonderful sense of achievement for her students. “Challenge” word tests are given to students that do well on pre-tests. Selected students ‘publish’ their stores – put them in a book and read them to the class. Students come up with and commit to quarterly goals - anything from improving math skills to participating more in class. The kids assess what areas they need to work on and what the parents and she can do to help them achieve their goals. She constantly works to commit parents to be involved in their children’s education. She requires signatures on notes sent home so parents are aware of all that goes on in class – from signing to confirm you know your child will be tested on the ‘challenge’ words for spelling, to signing to confirm we received the ‘Friday’ folders with all work from the week. Mrs. Irwin runs her classroom efficiently, teaches well, and keeps herself and her class extremely organized. She is truly an amazing teacher that manages to keep her entire class of almost 30 students in line, behaving well, learning to the best of their ability, and excited to come to school!
