Heritage Elementary

Tammy Custis is an incredible teacher who has impacted hundreds. Teaching 5th to 8th grade over the last 15 years, she has managed to touch so many lives. Her passion for teaching goes beyond education. She makes it her mission to equip her students to be positive, moral members of society. She holds them to a higher standard because she knows they can rise to them. In recent years, the school's community has showed lower incomes, which can affect the student's learning. I have seen first hand Tammy do such selfless acts of kindness to help her kids. She's bought shoes, lunches, and clothing for kids in need without expecting anything in return. Her classroom has such character, which is an out of pocket cost that she says is worth the money if one kid can succeed. She makes it a priority to get to know her students on a personal level and challenge them in their personal lives. She continues to help write curriculum, further her education and run on-campus groups. Being her daughter, I have had the pleasure of seeing the dedication she's put into her work. Her happiness makes me strive for a career that brings me such joy. She stays up late grading, lesson planning and making each student a hand-made craft for the holidays. We often joke that teachers are overworked and underpaid, but very much appreciated. I hope that by allowing Tammy Custis to be teacher of the week she will be able to feel an ounce of the gratitude her students feel for her. This is one woman who will continue to do what she loves regardless of the kudos given. Knowing she's making a difference in their lives makes all the obstacles worth it.
